Rafael Sebastián Guillén Vicente (more commonly known as Subcomandante Marcos; born 19 June 1957) is a Mexican revolutionary, military leader and former spokesperson for the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). On 1 January 1994, Marcos, along with the EZLN, captured territory in southern Mexico's Chiapas state, which they still hold to this day. As of 2023, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador has threatened civil war against the EZLN.[1][2]
Marcos and the EZLN have been criticized by some Marxist–Leninists for not taking advantage of establishing a revolutionary vanguard and refusing to engage in guerilla warfare or seize state power.
