Fritz Schmenkel was a German communist. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht in 1938 and was soon imprisoned for two years for opposing the Nazi regime. He rejoined the Wehrmacht in October 1941 on the Eastern Front and deserted in November. He joined an anti-fascist partisan group in February 1942 and spied on Nazi forces. The Nazis captured and executed him in February 1944, and he was posthumously awarded Hero of the Soviet Union in 1964.[1]
