George Blake (11 November 1922 – 26 December 2020) was a British communist and double agent who spied for the Soviet Union.

Early life[edit | edit source]

Blake was born in a Dutch-Egyptian family associated with the Egyptian Communist Party and moved to the UK in 1943. He joined the Royal Navy and later MI6.

Intelligence activities[edit | edit source]

Blake was captured by Korean forces during the Fatherland Liberation War and became a communist after seeing U.S. war crimes. He later warned the Soviet Union about the USA's illegal wiretapping of East German phone lines. The British arrested him when he returned to the UK and sentenced him to 42 years in prison in May 1961. He escaped in 1966 with the help of three other inmates imprisoned for opposing the U.S. military.[1]

Later life[edit | edit source]

Blake escaped to the USSR through a checkpoint in the GDR. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and Order of the Red Banner and lectured aspiring spies for KGB.[1]
