Gusano (Spanish for 'worm') is a term for rich white landowners who fled Cuba after the revolution. They glorify the racism and neocolonialism of Batista's dictatorship.[1]

Terrorist activities

In 1961, the USA tried to invade Cuba with an army of gusanos that was defeated within 72 hours. Many of them were former plantation owners, capitalists, or members of Batista's army.

Luis Posada Carriles, a right-wing exile, bombed Cubana Flight 455 in 1976.

Orlando Bosch organized terrorist attacks against Cuban hotels in 1997 and was pardoned by George H. W. Bush.[1]

Involvement in U.S. politics

Rafael Díaz-Balart, Batista's deputy internal minister, is the father of U.S. congressmen Lincoln and Mario Díaz-Balart. Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen proposed a bill in 2014 that would sanction Venezuela. Raoul Cantero, Batista's grandson, was a justice on the Florida Supreme Court.[1]
