Revision as of 22:51, 27 December 2022
The President of the United States is the head of state of the United States of America and commander-in-chief of the U.S. Armed Forces. The President is also the leader of the Executive branch and has the ability to sign and veto bills put forth by Congress and enforce laws that the legislative branch passes. The President is selected by the electors within the Electoral College to serve a four-year term, and can serve a maximum of two terms as per the 22nd Amendment.[Note 1] In total, there have been forty-five officeholders. Twenty-one of those forty-five officeholders were elected more than once, and all Presidents (with the exception of Grover Greveland) served their term(s) consecutively.
This list does not include Jefferson Davis, the President of the Confederacy; nor does it include David Rice Atchison, who claimed to have served as Acting President of the United States from 4-5 March 1849.
