The Alliance of Sahel States (AES) is an anti-imperialist alliance of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger.History[edit | edit source]
Background[edit | edit source]
The Sahel was relatively peaceful until 2011, when NATO used Islamic fundamentalist rebels to destroy the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya. These jihadists soon spread into neighboring countries and fought against their former French allies from 2014 to 2022 in Operation Barkhane.[1]
Formation[edit | edit source]
In 2021, Colonel Assimi Goïta led an anti-French revolution in Mali and allied with Burkina Faso and Niger. France encouraged ECOWAS to attack these countries, leading them to ally with each other.[1]
Imperialist attacks[edit | edit source]
On 27 July 2024, Islamic State supporters and Tuareg separatists attacked a Malian military convoy near the border with Algeria. When the Ukrainian government glorified the attack, Mali and Burkina Faso cut diplomatic ties with Ukraine.[1]
