The New York Times is a Statesian bourgeois newspaper. It has historically supported U.S. imperialism and far-right governments. Before publishing its articles, The New York Times sends them to the U.S. government for approval.[1]
It is a major mouthpiece for United States fascism and liberalism. A recent article published on 2024-02-02 by Thomas Friedman (a three-times Pulitzer winner) horrifically dehumanized the Palestinian people, in the mist of the Palestinian genocide and the other peoples of the middle east by comparing them to bugs. Per Ben Norton, "the NY Times is comparing victims of US-Israeli genocide and colonialism to insects. This is the contemporary equivalent of Nazi rhetoric that dehumanized their victims as cockroaches. Except now fascist ideology is so mainstream in the US, NYT columnist Thomas Friedman uses it."[2]
Criticism[edit | edit source]
Fascism[edit | edit source]
The New York Times praised Mussolini in an article from 1923.[3] Upon Hitler's release from Landsberg Prison in December 1924, it wrote that Hitler, "once the demi-god of reactionary extremists," had been "tamed," and he seemed a "sadder and wiser man [...] It was believed he would retire to private life and return to Austria."[4] In addition, The New York Times described the 1936 Summer Olympics hosted by Nazi Germany as "perfect in setting" and "the greatest sports event of all time."[5]
Imperialism[edit | edit source]
The New York Times has supported several right-wing CIA coups, including Iran in 1953, Brazil in 1964,[6] Chile in 1973,[7] Venezuela in 2002, and Bolivia in 2019.[6] It promoted NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia in 1993.[8]
Racism[edit | edit source]
In a 2019 article, climate change denier Bret Stephens cited white nationalist and eugenicist Henry Harpending, who claimed that Jews have higher IQs because of their genes.[9]
