Mutulu Shakur was a Black nationalist from the United States. He was granted parole in 2022 after spending 36 years as a political prisoner.[1]
Political work
In the late 1960s, Mutulu Shakur joined Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM). He later joined the Republic of New Afrika.
Shakur was part of the Lincoln Detox Project from 1970 to 1978 in New York City. The project was founded by the Black Panthers, Republic of New Afrika, Young Lords, and Students for a Democratic Society to help drug addicts.
Mutulu Shakur helped Assata Shakur, another U.S. political prisoner, escape to Cuba.[2]
Arrest and imprisonment
The FBI illegally targeted Shakur as part of COINTELPRO, and the prosecution used illegally seized evidence at his trial in 1988. While in prison, he contracted COVID-19 twice and is currently suffering from cancer.[2]
