Early life
Ligachyov was born in Siberia in 1920. He moved to Moscow and became an aviation engineer before going back to Novosibirsk to build planes for the Great Patriotic War. He joined the CPSU in 1944 and became the head of the Novosibirsk district in 1959. He became a member of the Politburo in 1983 under General Secretary Andropov.[1]
