Food loss and waste is food that is not eaten. The causes of food waste or loss are numerous and occur throughout the food system, during production, processing, distribution, retail and consumption. Overall, about one third of the world's food is thrown away.[1]

In China, the socialist government has instituted legislation to combat food waste[2][3] to "foster a resource-conserving and evnironmetnally-friendly society."[4]

In the capitalist United States, 30-40% of food is wasted, yet laws prohibit the donation of food to those in need.[5]
