Christopher Joseph Helali is a Statesian activist who served as the international secretary of the Party of Communists USA and ran as a communist in the 2022 legislative election to the U.S. Senate to represent Vermont.[1] He was the first communist to run in a major U.S. election since 1984.[2] The Department of Homeland Security targeted him because of his connections to Antifa and his experience fighting against ISIS in Syria.[3] Helali supports the People's Republic of China despite the Constitution and Statutes of PCUSA rejecting of all socialist experiments in the 21st century and of market socialism[4] and the Russian Federation[citation needed] and has written several editorials for CGTN.[5]
Helali was formerly an anarchist and Secretary-Treasurer of the Boston Branch of the IWW in 2016 before being disgraced and accused of embezzlement of organization funds to the amount of $4,510. Zipporah Legarde, Helali’s ex-partner, stated that the two had decided to have a child, but that Helali abandoned her after getting her pregnant and refused to take accountability for the child.[6] On 2 May 2019, Zipporah wrote a statement explaining that Helali had filed a temporary restraining order against her and had been purposely avoiding child support and paternity papers, noting that his legal actions and emotional abuse jeopardized her safety and warning that those who supported her should not engage with Helali since this might extend the conflict, writing, "we should honor his choice, especially as disobeying puts me in danger of further involvement with the State."[7]
