The Soviet Union, officially known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), was a transnational union of Marxist–Leninist socialist states that existed in Eurasia from 1922 to 1991.

It was established in 1922 as a union of four socialist republics created after the 1917 October Revolution, namely the Russian SFSR, the Transcaucasian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR and Byelorussian SSR. The years that followed saw the addition of the Uzbek and Tajik SSRs; the Transcaucasian SFSR was dissolved in 1936 in favor of the elevated SSRs of Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. From 1956 to 1991, the union comprised 15 member republics, two of which had their own member seats at the United Nations. (Full article...)

Gennady Ivanovich Yanayev (26 August 1937 – 24 September 2010) was a Soviet politician who served as Mikhail Gorbachev's vice president (the only vice president in the history of the USSR) from 1990 until 1991.

Yanayev was instumental in the plotting of the 1991 August Coup, which had the goal of ousting the revisionist Gorbachev from office and rolling-back his policies. The coup failed however, and Yanayev was sentenced to prison. The Soviet Union was overthrown in a counterrevolution in December 1991, and Yanayev was eventually released from prison in 1994. He died from lung cancer in September 2010. (Full article...)
