William Jefferson Clinton (born August 19, 1946), commonly known as Bill Clinton, is a politician who served as the 42nd president of the United States of America from 1993 to 2001. He previously served as governor of Arkansas from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992, and as attorney general of Arkansas from 1977 to 1979. He is a member of the U.S. Democratic party and husband of fellow politician Hillary Clinton.
Clinton signed the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) into law, which came into effect in 1994.[1]
Some of the events occurring during Clinton's administration were a major four-day bombing campaign in Iraq in 1998, code named Operation Desert Fox, and the 78 day NATO bombing of Yugoslavia in 1999. During the 78 days of the bombing campaign, NATO warplanes flew over 35,000 combat missions against 200 Yugoslav cities and towns, targeting apartment buildings, schools, hospitals, factories and other workplaces, with the attacks turning more than 1 million people into refugees.[2]
Early life
While studying at Oxford in the 1960s, Clinton participated in Operation Chaos and reported anti-war protestors to the CIA.[3]
Presidential campaign
Clinton ran against George H. W. Bush in the 1992 presidential campaign. Both candidates were involved in the Iran–Contra affair, and Clinton had deployed the Contras to Honduras near the Nicaraguan border.[3]
