Xi Zhongxun (15 October 1913 — 24 May 2002) was a Chinese communist revolutionary and father of current Chinese president Xi Jinping. He served as the Head of the Publicity Department for the Communist Party of China from 1953 until 1954, as General-Secretary of the State Council from 1954 until 1965, and as Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress from 1980 until his retirement in 1993. He and his family were unfairly persecuted during the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.

Early life and communist revolutionary activities[edit | edit source]

Xi was born in 1913 in Fuping County, Shaanxi Province, to a landowning family. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1926, and took part in anti-government demonstrations, for which he was arrested.

In 1935, Xi became one of the base leaders of the Shaanxi—Gansu Revolutionary Base Area.
