Jair Messias Bolsonaro (born 21 March 1955) is a far-right Brazilian politician who was the president of Brazil from 2019 to 2022. He supports the right-wing military dictatorship that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985 and is an ally of Donald Trump.[1] Bolsonaro mismanaged the COVID-19 pandemic, destroyed the environment, and promoted racism and sexism.[2] After losing the 2022 presidential election to Lula, he fled to the United States.[3]

CIA connections

Bolsonaro visited CIA headquarters multiple times during his presidency and met with high-ranking CIA officials.[4]

Indigenous genocide

Violence against indigenous peoples increased significantly during Bolsonaro's rule, from 242 during Dilma Rousseff's entire 5.5-year term to 416 in 2022 alone. In 2022, there were 180 assassinations against indigenous people and 28 attempted assassinations. Deforestation in the Amazon reached its highest level in 15 years in 2021.[4]

Post-Presidency

In June of 2023 Bolsonaro was prohibited from exercising political rights until 2030. This was a decision by the Superior Electoral Court and was a result of being charged with abuse of power between 2019 and 2023.[5]

Bolsonaro is currently under investigation by the Brazilian federal police due to concerns that he was harassing a humpback whale while riding a jet-ski in June of 2023 in Sao Sebastiao. A video has been circulating of a man resembling him approaching the whale in violation of Brazilian law.[6]
