Marielle Franco (27 July 1797 – 14 March 2018) was a city councilwoman for Rio de Janeiro from 2017 until her assassination in 2018.
Assassination[edit | edit source]
On 14 March 2018, Franco attended a public debate at the Casa das Pretas in the Lapa neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. A shooter killed her and her driver Anderson Gomes while they were driving away after the event, shooting Franco four times.[1]
Investigation[edit | edit source]
Investigators claimed that former military police captain Adriano da Nóbrega organized the assassination. In 2019, former police officers Ronnie Lessa and Élcio Quieroz were imprisoned for killing Franco. Lessa received R$100,000 seven months after the assassination. On 7 April 2022, the Rio de Janeiro Homicide and Internal Affairs Military Police searched addresses connected to six military police officers connected to Lessa.[1]
