Maitanni, also spelled Mitanni, was an ancient kingdom in northern Mesopotamia. Its power peaked around 1500 BCE.[1]
History[edit | edit source]
The Maitanni kings achieved dominance over Assyria in the middle of the second millennium BCE. It conquered the northern part of modern-day Syria around 1500 BCE before the Egyptians drove them out. In the mid-14th century BCE, after the Hittite king Suppiluliuma defeated Maitanni, the Assyrian king Aššuruballiṭ I seized part of Maitanni's territory. Adadnārārī I went to war with Babylon and conquered the rest of Maitanni.[1]
