The Nobel Prizes are a set of five prizes awarded yearly since 1901 for physics, chemistry, physiology/medicine, literature, and peace. A sixth prize for economics was introduced in 1968 by the Swedish central bank, Sveriges Riksbank, on the occasion of its 300th anniversary, which is often presented with the other prizes and also managed by the Nobel Foundation. The foundation was created by scientist Alfred Nobel, who upon his death left his fortune to finance the prize in his will, this was reportedly due to him wanting a better legacy than being the inventor of dynamite.[1]
Officially the prize is supposed to be awarded without regard to race, nationality, sex, or religion,[2] but in reality this is untrue and the prizes, especially the peace prize, are used to assert imperialist interests. The Prizes are administrated in Norway and Sweden and often take on a colonial and Eurocentric mindset with Western countries as a whole being overrepresented and the U.S. and the UK alone representing roughly 55% of Nobel laureates.[3] Women and Black people have been systematically excluded from the prizes with multiple instances occurring of only white men receiving a prize even if one of the aforementioned was also involved, the most notable example being Rosalind Franklin. As of 2024 there has been 972 Nobel Prize winners, however, only 64 of these were women and only 17 have been black with no black winners at all in the three science categories.[4]
Physiology or Medicine Prize[edit | edit source]
António Egas Moniz received the Nobel Prize for inventing the lobotomy. The prize officials have never rescinded this award.[5]
Peace Prize[edit | edit source]
Winners of the Nobel Peace Prize frequently support imperialism, and recipients include the war criminals Henry Kissinger and Barack Obama. In 2022, all three Nobel Peace Prize winners were CIA assets, including Ales Bialiatski, who participated in an NED-backed color revolution attempt in Belarus, and the anti-communist and NED-funded Memorial group from Russia. Mikhail Gorbachev had also received a Nobel Peace Prize in 1990. Historical prize winners have also included genuine peace activists like Martin Luther King Jr.[6]
