Osama bin Laden (10 March 1957 – 2 May 2011) was a CIA-funded[1] jihadist who fought against the Red Army and Democratic Republic of Afghanistan. Before the September 11 attacks, the Western media praised him for his role in fighting communism.[2]

The United States used the codename Geronimo (the name of an Apache leader who fought against colonizers from 1850 to 1886) to refer to Osama bin Laden.[1]
