Leftypedia is an online collaborative encyclopedia that inspired the creation of ProleWiki. Unlike ProleWiki, Leftypedia aims to be a big tent organisation, containing views from all sections of "leftism," whether Marxist or not.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Leftypedia originated in 2019 with the purpose of safeguarding content from Marxistpedia following its shutdown. Initially hosted at the leftypedia.org domain, the site was taken down in July 2022. However, it was subsequently revived under the wiki.leftypol.org domain later that year, where it remains active as of 2024.[2]

Edit wars[edit | edit source]

Between February and August 2023, administrator Harrystein banned several alt accounts of Wisconcom.[3]

Hoxhaist coup attempt[edit | edit source]

RedParabola was promoted to administrator on 18 June 2024. MediaWiki allows administrators to ban other administrators, including those who appointed them.[4] RedParabola banned Harrystein and nine other users over the course of 16 minutes, accusing some of being anarchists, Maoists, or left-communists despite the non-sectarian principles of the wiki.[3] RedParabola then deleted several pages including People's Republic of China, which he described as a "fascist and social-imperialist state,"[5] before retiring and handing over power to Aussig,[6] who then banned four users including RedParabola himself,[3] and Stalinium Magnus (an alt of either RedParabola or Aussig) changed the wiki's description to be explicitly "anti-revisionist Marxist–Leninist" instead of generically leftist.[7][8]

Discomrade, who had been blocked but not removed from administrator roles, was able to unban themself and temporarily restore admin powers to Harrystein and Capuch1n, allowing Harrystein to permanently ban Aussig and RedParabola, restore the formerly deleted pages, and unblock other users banned during the coup attempt.[8] In a statement after the incident, Harrystein stated that RedParabola was likely an alt account of Wisconcom.[4]

Comparison to ProleWiki[edit | edit source]

The primary difference between ProleWiki and Leftypedia is that Leftypedia seeks to be a big tent, "catch-all leftist" encyclopedia,[1] whereas ProleWiki expressly follows the line of scientific socialism and Marxism-Leninism. Without an emphasis on scientific socialism, one runs the risk of supporting imperialist propaganda against socialist states, due to allowing multiple tendencies definitions' of imperialism which may contradict one another. This was attempted by ProleWiki with other Marxist currents in its very early days, and ultimately led to endless debates in private internal chats that negatively impacted the output of content on pages.

Another difference is that Leftypedia is only available in English while ProleWiki has instances in several other languages in the spirit of proletarian internationalism.
