Donbass, also stylized as Donbas, (Russian: Донбасс; Ukrainian: Донбас) is a region in eastern Europe. It includes the Russian subjects of the Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics.[a] There has been a war in Donbass since 2014 between the People's Republics and the Ukrainian government.[1] Most people in Donbass speak Russian as their primary language.[2] The region of Donbas was also included in Novorossiya.[3]
History[edit | edit source]
In 2014, the people of Donbass took up arms against the coup government of Ukraine and declared secession from the country. In response, the Ukrainian government launched the Siege of Donbass and began a heavy bombardment of the region's civilians population.[4]
During the 2022 Special Military Operation, the Russian army was welcomed as liberators.[5]
On September 30th, 2022, after a referendum,[6] both the People's Republics that constituted the Donbass region joined the Russian Federation and were given the status of federal subjects.[7]
