Lemmygrad is a communist, Marxist-Leninist social media platform founded in August 2019.[1] Lemmygrad is based on Lemmy.

Lemmygrad was created by dessalines and Farmer Heck.[a] It has over 34,000 posts and over 360 active users.[2]

History

Lemmygrad was the second Lemmy instance created, after lemmy.ml.[3] Lemmygrad's mission statement is to create a proletarian-owned and controlled social media platform that exists outside the control and jurisdiction of US tech companies. Lemmy shares a similar mission statement.[4]

r/GenZedong immigration

In March 2022, Reddit quarantined r/GenZedong, which resulted in GenZedong users migrating to Lemmygrad to keep the community solvent.[5] After Reddit banned and removed r/GenZhou, an educational companion subreddit to r/GenZedong, Lemmygrad users resurrected an archive of it at /c/genzhouarchive.[6]

DDoS attack

In April 2022, liberals organized a series of distributed denial of service attacks against Lemmygrad.[7]

Purge of patriotic socialists

In July 2022, the moderators of Lemmygrad made a joint statement banning patriotic socialism and support for settler colonialism.[8] In September 2022, MAGA communists banned from Lemmygrad created an impostor instance called lemmygrad.com.[9]

New rules

In September 2022, Lemmygrad adopted two new rules banning sexual content and right-deviationists (MAGA communists, nazbols, etc.). While the moderators were already following these rules in practice, the announcement formalized Lemmygrad's stance on these issues.[10]

User demographics

Lemmygrad's user demographic has been growing steadily as Reddit continues to censor Marxist and communist communities,[11] and as racist attacks against Chinese and Russian users increase.

In May 2023, Reddit greatly increased its API pricing, making many third party apps collapse and causing a mass migration to Lemmy, including Lemmygrad.

In June 2023, the first ever demographics survey was ran on Lemmygrad.[12] With a sample size of 301 respondents (or around 85% of the site's active users at the time), the survey found that most users of Lemmygrad are cis males, with trans and other non-heteronormative identities greatly overrepresented from the general population. Most users are between the age of 25 and 34. Most also consider themselves white and come from the imperial core (English North America and Western Europe), but the survey also found out that Lemmygrad has users from all regions of the world. Interestingly, despite this majority of cis and white users, 60% of Lemmygrad users do not identify as cis, heterosexual white males.
