The Orinoco Tribune (OT) is a pro-Chavista anti-imperialist independent news outlet which focuses on both creating their own articles and videos as well as curating and translating articles from other sources, especially Spanish-speaking Venezuelan sources, so they can reach Western audiences with alternative views not permitted on the corporate media.[1] A 2021 article by the outlet's founder described Orinoco Tribune as "openly and unequivocally Chavista, socialist, and anti-imperialist."[2]
Their about page states that they will "defend the causes of the less privileged, the Chavistas, the working class, the peasant movements, the anti-imperialists, as well as those who have been denied access to the media" and that they will reject all content which replicates imperialist narratives[3] and noted in a 2021 article that "We have attempted to develop a Latin American and global approach [...] we try to inform our readers and viewers about the atrocities of imperialism and capitalism across the world."[2]
Orinoco Tribune was founded in November 2018.[2] The outlet's contributors are mainly volunteers.[2]
Editorial guidelines[edit | edit source]
In their editorial guidelines, they tell potential contributors not to include the kind of criticism of anti-imperialist countries and leaders typically found in mainstream media. They list Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Syria, Iran, DPRK, China, and Russia as some examples of countries which have resisted US imperialism and thus faced such criticism in mainstream media. They note however that they do accept and respect "constructive criticism that is intended to improve world affairs."[4] In addition, they reject fascism, antisemitism, homophobia, racism, machismo, Russophobia, Sinophobia, xenophobia, and anticommunism. They draw a distinction between antisemitism and anti-Zionism, stating that anti-Zionism is welcomed.[4]
