William McKinley (January 29, 1843 – September 14, 1901) was the 25th President of the United States, ruling from 1897 until his assassination in 1901. He took power after the United States had already conquered its continental territory and went to war with Spain to expand U.S. rule to Guam, Hawaii, the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Samoa.[1]

Assassination[edit | edit source]

The anarchist Leon Czolgosz shot and killed McKinley in September 1901 at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Following the assassination, Emma Goldman was imprisoned for two weeks for allegedly inspiring the assassination but was released.[1]
