EcuRed is a Cuban online encyclopedia built on MediaWiki software, the same software that ProleWiki and Wikipedia both use. Launched on 13 December 2010, the site hosts over 206,000 reference articles, biographies and academic works.
The name, according to EcuRed itself, comes from the Spanish word "ecumene" which translates to world, specifically the part of the world that is inhabited by humankind. The latter half of the name, "Red" means "Net" in Spanish. It's merely a coincidence that the color red is symbolic for communism, which is the system advocated for by the ruling party of Cuba.
