Lemmygrad is a communist, Marxist-Leninist social media platform founded in August 2019.[1] Lemmygrad is based on Lemmy.

Lemmygrad was created by dessalines and Farmer Heck.[a] It has over 34,000 posts and over 360 active users.[2]

History

Lemmygrad was the second Lemmy instance created, after lemmy.ml.[3] Lemmygrad's mission statement is to create a proletarian-owned and controlled social media platform that exists outside the control and jurisdiction of US tech companies. Lemmy shares a similar mission statement.[4]

r/GenZedong immigration

In March 2022, Reddit quarantined r/GenZedong, which resulted in GenZedong users migrating to Lemmygrad to keep the community solvent.[5] After Reddit banned and removed r/GenZhou, an educational companion subreddit to r/GenZedong, Lemmygrad users resurrected an archive of it at /c/genzhouarchive.[6]

DDoS attack

In April 2022, liberals organized a series of distributed denial of service attacks against Lemmygrad.[7]

Purge of patriotic socialists

In July 2022, the moderators of Lemmygrad made a joint statement banning patriotic socialism and support for settler colonialism.[8] In September 2022, MAGA communists banned from Lemmygrad created an impostor instance called lemmygrad.com.[9]

New rules

In September 2022, Lemmygrad adopted two new rules banning sexual content and right-deviationists (MAGA communists, nazbols, etc.). While the moderators were already following these rules in practice, the announcement formalized Lemmygrad's stance.[10]

User demographics

Lemmygrad's user base has been growing steadily as Reddit continues to censor Marxist and communist communities,[11] and as racist attacks against Chinese and Russian users increase.

In May 2023, Reddit greatly increased its API pricing, making many third party apps collapse and causing a mass migration to Lemmy, including Lemmygrad.[12]

In June 2023, Lemmygrad ran its first ever demographics survey with a sample size of 301 respondents (around 85% of the site's active users at the time.[13] Only 38.7% of users are straight white cis males.[14]

Most users are young, with 7% under 18, 32% between 18 and 24, and 45% between 25 and 34. Only one user is aged 65 or older.[14]

61% of users are proletarians (83.8% if labor aristocracy is also included). 7% were petty-bourgeois, and 7% were lumpenproletarians. 55% of users are employed, mostly in full-time jobs (43.1% of the total), 16% are unemployed or unable to work, and 27.6% are students.[14]

11% of users have physical disabilities, and 60.8% have mental disabilities.[14]

Gender and sexuality

Only 52% of users are straight, followed by 18% bisexual, 6.7% gay, 6.7% pansexual, and 5.7% asexual. 71% of users are cis males, 9.3% are transgender females, 7.6% are nonbinary, 4% are cis females, and 1% are trans males.[14]
