Jordan Bernt Peterson (born 12 June 1962) is a Canadian clinical psychologist and public speaker who gained prominence in 2016 by lying about the contents of a bill put forth by the Liberal Party of Canada. He also shared a BDSM video claiming it was footage of a Chinese sperm bank.[2]
Anti-communism[edit | edit source]
Peterson is a persistent anti-communist. He willingly conflates postmodernism with Marxism despite their incompatibility.[3] According to Peterson, these "postmodern neomarxists" have infiltrated college campuses to indoctrinate young minds with "resentment-ridden ideology" that will "undermine western civilization".[4]
Peterson has admitted that his only experience with Marxist theory is him reading the Manifesto of the Communist Party. The only other source of knowledge on the subject is the book Explaining Postmodernism: Skepticism and Socialism from Rousseau to Foucault by Stephen Hicks, a book with many scholarly errors and misreading of various philosophers.[5] The limits of Peterson's knowledge regarding Marxism were brought to the forefront when he had a public debate with compatible left thinker Slavoj Žižek where he misrepresents the short pamphlet he claims to have read.[6]
Nazi sympathies[edit | edit source]
Peterson criticized the Canadian government for creating hate speech laws to prosecute prominent neo-Nazi Ernst Zündel and said that a part of him could be deeply satisfied being an Auschwitz concentration camp guard. He argued that Hitler could not be blamed for his role in the Second World War and that, "the Nazis had all sorts of positive reasons for what they were doing." He also questioned the validity of the guilty verdicts at the Nuremberg trials.[1]
Peterson described Hitler as a "canny, canny person with a brilliant, brilliant sense of drama," a "wise father," and even a god.[1]
Jordan Peterson gifted the Nazi-inspired flag of Kekistan to his father, Walter Peterson. He described the alt-right as "benevolent" but "incomplete." He goose-stepped and did the Nazi salute in front of students at the University of Toronto.[1]
