The Lao People's Revolutionary Party is the ruling and only legal party in the Lao People's Democratic Republic. The party was founded in 1955 and led by Kaysone Phomvihane until his death. The party began an insurgence against the Laotian monarchy in 1957 and took power in 1975 with the help of North Vietnam and other socialist states. The party is currently led by General Secretary Thongloun Sisoulith and has 158 out of 164 seats in the National Assembly.
