The Communist Party of Ireland (CPI) is an all-Ireland Marxist-Leninist political party. It was founded in 1933 and is a member of the International Meeting of Communist and Workers' Parties.[1] It publishes two newspapers, the weekly Unity and monthly Socialist Voice. The Connolly Youth Movement is organizationally independent but in practice operates as the youth wing of the party.

Eugene McCartan has been General-Secretary since 2002 while Janelle McAteer has been Chairperson since 2021.

The rest of the party is controlled by the Ard Fheis, or the National Congress. They made by called into session by the Ardcomhairle, or the National Executive Committee.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

During the Irish Civil War, the CPI supported the IRA against British imperialism and the neocolonial Irish Free State.[3]
